PA#2 (Interview a Student in the Class)

PA#2

Dear Students,

For your second paragraph assignment, you will be interviewing (and be interviewed by) another student in the class.

Please write a paragraph about that student. Make sure that you capture something -- not everything -- important about your colleague. Don't try to say everything. Narrow the focus to one critical quality.

That focus will allow you to provide the kind of evidence and detail that makes the paragraph real and engaging.

For example, let's say the student is on the golf team. Surely, the student experienced one moment that ensured that he or she would be a golfer forever. Describe the student's interest, but make it real to the reader. Capture that moment.

Post the paragraph here as a comment to this assignment by T/9/2 at 5 PM. Bring a hard copy to class on W/93.

David Krein writing about Ryan Ehrhardt

Ryan Ehrhardt was born in June 1996, and he has a very unique family. Ryan’s family raises and trains race horses to compete in races all over the country. The Ehrhardt family gets their horses around age two, and races them through their prime until about age fourteen. The horses are fed a mix of corn and oat feed to ensure their ultimate nutrition and success. The fastest horse the Ryan has ever raised was named True to Mach and ran a one mile in one minute and 49.1 seconds. True to Mach was Ryans favorite horse because it was the fastest and because Ryan would feed True to Mach his favorite candy after each race, Reece’s peanut butter cups.

First off, who in the world is Mallory Torr? Well for starters she is a young woman from Pennsylvania. Her hometown is called Sharon and it is about one hour away from the state capitol of Pittsburg. Mallory is just starting her first year here at Ohio Wesleyan as a member of the women’s basketball team and she is majoring in accounting. She enjoys vacations, trips to the beaches, and hanging out with her friends and family. This summer she went on a trip to Hollywood and had a brush with fame when Oprah walked past the car she was in. After this “last bash of summer”, she began her first day on campus. Her major deciding factor when it came to choosing to come to here was the fact that she liked the campus. As mentioned before, she was offered a spot on the women’s basketball team. Basketball is something that she has deeply loved for many years. Mallory began playing the sport since she was in third grade, that’s almost nine years that she has been at this. When asked why she decided to start playing, she responded that basketball is a sport that most of the members of her family has played, so it was her family that fostered this love for the game. Without any aspirations to continue into professional basketball makes her uncountable hours of commitment and general enjoyment of the game all the more remarkable.

Professor Burns is a very interesting individual, He has been a professor here at OWU for the past thirty-one years. When in college, he majored in philosophy and has a deep interest in the nature of reality and astronomy. he is interested in those two because they are intertwined as he is on his search for the thing that unites him with the cosmos. That is another reason that he enjoys backpacking so much as it gives him a n opportunity to retreat deep into his self and get to know who he is. Professor Burns has found that thing that he has searched for a few times, one of those times is when a student of his perfects their writing process, however he still continues to search for those instances . Professor Burns is a very intelligent individual who searches for meaning in whatever it is that he does.

Pan Niyomthai is a twenty year old student here at OWU, music has become a big part of his life, yet, he didn’t choose to have an interest in playing. Born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand he was forced to play an instrument by his parents who are big advocates in his life, his mother especially. Apparently most Thai students are forced to play an instrument to make them more well rounded. It’s a long story on how he discovered OWU but he doesn’t regret going through the tough situations that brought him here and shaped him to be the individual he is now. He is a gifted musician, by that I mean he can play four different instruments including the piano, drums, bass, and guitar. Music has become a huge part of his life now, he has taken it as a hobby and a job. He works back home in Thailand as a nightclub performer jamming out on the guitar, which he has only been playing for about two years, and plays recreationally with every other instrument. I was lucky to have connected with Pan because we found out that we both have been through situations that brought us here to OWU, it really was a pleasure to get to know him!

Stories about athletes who injure themselves during a game can either be devastating or uplifting: there's no in-between. In the case of Jonathan Griggs, it's the latter. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jon didn't realize his passion until he blew out his knee during a football game in his senior year of high school. Now a sophomore, Jon is a Health and Human Kinetics major, and plans to attend physical therapy school after graduation. The experience that he went through, no doubt unfortunate, was instrumental in helping him realize that his aim in life is to help kids get back on the field even if they suffer injuries. It's not easy to bounce back from something as critical as a knee injury, and Jon went through his share of struggles before being able to join the basketball team here at Ohio Wesleyan University. For a while after the incident, the fear that he might never be able to play again was all too real in his mind. Despite the fact that he has healed since then, he still wears a knee brace when he plays, and has attributed that to being psychological. Most low points in life pave the way for honest, humbling realizations, and potentially lead to avenues for personal growth, and that is true in Jon's case. The injury helped him gain a new perspective about life, and he was able to discern what is important and separate it from the unimportant.

Erin Fannin is a very interesting individual from the small town of Goshen Ohio. Goshen Ohio is about 45 minutes away from Cincinnati. Erin is part of the incoming OWU freshman class. When asked why she choose OWU, she stated that she liked the Zoology program they offered here which she plans to major in. Recently Erin joined the Rock Climbing Club and Ski Club in her desire to become more active. A very interesting hobby that Erin picked up a little over three years ago with the help of her uncle is Cosplay. This interesting activity involves dressing up as comic characters and then going to conventions. Erin and her best friend who she has known since she was four attend these events together dressing up as different comic characters. Erin most notable characters were dressing up as Tauriel, which is a main character in the film “The Hobbit”. Also, Faith a well known character in the TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Throughout this whole experience Erin has been able to meet many actors and actresses from the series StarrTrex and Lord of the Rings. She has also met people who played Zombies on AMC hit series “The Walking Dead.” This weekend Erin shared with me that she has a convention in Cincinnati where she plans to dress up as Captain America. When concluding my conversation with Erin she says that her favorite comic series is X-man and overall enjoys watching all the different type of superhero movies.

  10. Ricky, or rather He, is an international student who spares himself and others the ordeal of mispronouncing his name upon any initial encounter. An only child from a medium sized town in China, near Shanghai, Ricky wishes to pursue a degree in engineering. The drive behind his plans truly makes him a rarity in my book. Physic has always been one of the more disturbing subjects I’ve ever had the misfortune of encountering, yet it seems to be Ricky’s passion.

  11. There is a young man who is in my Freshman Writing class, but also lives directly across from me in the dorms of Smith West Hall. His name is David Krein, and he plays lacrosse for the Ohio Wesleyan Club team. Whenever I think of David, I automatically think of sports. But, there is a little more behind the scenes of his life that I would never had thought. David really enjoys the outdoors and spending his time hiking. In the future, he would like to travel through the Appalachians. Lastly, David is a fan of fishing at the local ponds of his neighborhood by his house. His desires include deep sea fishing in the Pacific, and fishing for Salmon in Alaska. Although the weather is very cold in Alaska, David favors it more than he favors high temperatures. David is not quite sure what else he wants to do in the future on his free time, but he assures that it will be unforgettable and adventurous.

The definition of 'self' tends to be defined by how people in our sociological surrounding perceive us, it is a definite issue that most or all teenagers pass through at a certain part in life. It was no different for Peter Hamblett, who found himself caring too much about his identification of self: a self-esteem built from playing lacrosse since 9 had turned him into a nasty lacrosse player in High School. Being at the wrong place and wrong time, it had made him miss many important opportunities for college. But instead of regret, he coped with his emotions and found his way to Ohio Wesleyan University where his mom and uncle had attended before. It was not, however, because of them that he had join, but rather his lacrosse coach who had shown him that he was not the best, and that the team here is tough and competitive. And with the athletic spirit, this had become a great opportunity for him because it will allow him to feel in place with the other players - like a brotherhood - while also being able to focus on school instead of partying. I have gained a respect for Peter for his ability to find optimism out of the bad choices that had happen, change them into new opportunities; it reminds me of myself in so many ways I would say he is a counterpart from another nation. Using lacrosse to stay on path, while keeping it as a secondary goal after academic success.

  13. Besides the desire to be a lineman on the OWU football team, Alexis Ramirez’s aspirations are defined by his love and respect for his parents. They are certainly deserving of both. They went through what must have been a very traumatic “crossing the border thing,” as Alexis put it. Afterward, they both took low-paying jobs as janitors to raise children with lofty goals. In spite of great hardship, they have succeeded in that dream. Alexis is driven to succeed in college in part out of his deep affection for his parents. As a result, he does not want to be a financial burden to them in the future. For example, his parents offered to take out student loans to pay for his college education. Instead, he will take out the loans himself. “These are MY loans,” he told them. Their dedication to Alexis and his brother and sister has certainly borne fruit. His parents have certainly created in Alexis a young man that any parent would be proud of.

Allie Breymaier is bound for success. Allie has a family target on sports. She, aspiring to rank high in golf and a cousin pitching in big league baseball. But it would not be far-fetched to say she has already reached and exceeded her aspirations for sports. Allie has 90% of her tuition already paid by her school because of her success, she also plans to major in business at Ohio Wesleyan University. Her goals are set high, but her progress is already great.

After getting to many concussions in sports like box he was no longer able to play sports. Sports not being an option he started playing the Saxophone and fell in love with music. This made him want to pursue a carrier in music.

  16. I interviewed David Herbawi. David is 19 years old and comes from Cambridge Massachusetts. When asked what made him want to come to school at Ohio Wesleyan University, David said that his family wanted him to come to OWU and that he liked the fact that this is a small university far from home. David is currently an undecided major, and has an interest in entertainment. He is very up-to-date with the news and also loves watching classic action movies, such as Bruce Lee. Also, David is into video gaming. He likes to play games on his PC and X-box, like Age of Empires and Red Orchestra. David loves to go out to eat and see movies with his friends as well. For right now, David plans on doing things that he loves and working on getting his core classes done while studying at Ohio Wesleyan University.
